Zakarpatski Guni


Among archaic fields of agricultural weaving of this area guni occupy a special place. Guni was an inseparable part of both men’s and woman’s dress. It is a part of a dress that people wear on their shoulders. It is made of a rough wool fabric, mainly of white color, it can be rather simple, filled with natural nap and with long weaved woolen threads. In Zakarpattia, guni were among the important ritual sacrificed things, which also played the role of a charm. They were constantly present at weddings, specially prepared for newborns – for them to be healthy, they were put under a host’s feet in a Holy evening – to have peace and welfare in the family, a master had to put on guni while building a house – for all the good, etc. Romana Kobalchynska, the honorable worker of culture not once has done extensive research on the unique Zakarpattia folk dress, has made notes about a great number of signs and customs starting from their production and till the standards of their usage. Guni’s basis is hemp. A reader can read about its special processing and weaving in the material of the scientist.
