Mykola Shribliak, a Carver


Valentyna Molyn, an art expert from Kosovo dedicated her narration to Mykola Shkribliak’s 150th birth jubilee, the middle son of the outstanding Hutsuly woodcarver Yuriy Ivanovych Shkribliak. Mykola Shkribliak (1858 – 1920), a mster from a famous dynasty, a participant of a number of exhibitions, in particular in Ternopil (1887), Lviv (1887, 1894, 1905), Kolomyya (1912) and others created a special way of decorating wooden items – combination of “cutting carving” with decoration of beads of tender color. He paid attention to light shadow and color effects. Compositional solution of decoration also had its specific character – the decorations were located rhythmically throughout all item’s surface. The Shkribliaks’ masters’ works became the classics of Ukrainian carving. Nowadays they are exhibited in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kolomyya, Kosovo and other cities museums.
