Vasyl Shcherbak

Sergiy Kolos’ Dramatic Collisions

Under the heading “Memory” Vasyl Shcherbak, PhD in Art, writes about this famous figure in Ukrainian culture. The author was his student in 1946 in Kyiv Applied Art College. For respecting national traditions and love to native land Sergiy Kolos had a lot of troubles – he was treated as a nationalist and constantly was under the surveillance of the competent Soviet bodies. Though, as a matter of fact, the word internationalist suited him better. Sergiy Kolos was born in 1886 in Petersburg. Studied in the university in Lviv where he met Ivan Franko and other cultural figures. In 1911 he went to Italy where he studied at the university in Naples, then there was Art Institute in Nice (France), in 1918 he became a student of Ukrainian Art Academy at F. Krychevskyi’s shop and then at M. Boychuk’s. From 1929 he was a professor in Kyiv Art Institute and the author of the first thematic tapestries in the Soviet art. He was the author of a number of principle scientific developments, participated in cultural activities. It’s a pity Sergiy Kolos’ scientific and creative art heritage hasn’t yet been properly researched.
