MARIYA NELEP’S PAINTING CHRONICLES

Discovery of such a talented artist was a real wonder for ethnography and art critic Tetiana Poshyvailo: “when we entered modern urban apartment, we found ourselves in rural life paradise: walls of a hall, bathroom and kitchen were decorated with bright and colorful wall paintings from the floor to the ceiling… In the kitchen there was a painting of a church that occupied the whole wall, in the rooms all walls were covered with paintings. What a paradise!” On the contrary, the master’s fate turned out to be hard and tragic: orphan’s childhood, war, hard work at construction, marriage to a disabled veteran, eight years of nursing a sick son… The artist’s world perception was bright, wise, but at the same time childish. Possessing strong genetic link, she followed Kateryna Bilokur, Mariya Pryimachenko, Ivan Lysenko and Ganna Shabatura’s spiritual traditions, yet not taking over traditional folk art painting standards… Mariya reflected her own internal world in her paintings.
