YEVHENIYA HENYK FROM BEREZIV VILLAGE

This year a famous embroideress, honorable master of Ukrainian folk art marked her 80th jubilee by the exhibition in the NUFAMU halls. The visitors – among them the President of Ukraine V. Yushchenko with his family – admired her unique works full of sophistication and warmth. The high culture of technique (she perfectly executes 69 techniques) was impressive. She has been embroidering since she was five. Her mother was her teacher. From the very beginning the girls started doing “not as everybody did”. The master’s colleague Mykola Symchych tells dramatic story of her life that included exile caused by her brother’s joining the UPA, she had the yoke of “the family of people’s enemy”, escaping to her motherland and her devoted service to all the best. Yevheniya Henyk has embroidered 400 rushnyks, napkins, table clothes, carpets, men and women’s shirts. She has worked in the field of traditional weaving, beads decoration etc. A great number of exhibitions brought her acknowledgement and fame.
