Oleksandr Naiden

IVAN MATIYASH

(p. 51) T.H. Shevchenko's poetry in linoleum engravings. This artist, who formally has a status of an amateur one, from the point of view of the Doctor of Arts, an art expert, Oleksandr Naiden, is distinguished by that his certain "scientific" professionalism is combined with the characteristic of a folk master such as improvising naturalness and ingeniousness. There are a few ethnographic elements in these linoleum engravings, as well as Shevchenko has a few of them himself. There are some facts of similarity between Matiyash and Shevchenko's human and creative fates. Particularly, the life of both in Sanct-Petersburg after Ukrainian rural environment. Petersburg itself, which is a city-image, a city-metaphor influenced the nature of artwork of both Ukrainians, especially its ornamental designs and color factors. A certain rhythmical and plastic (sound, intonation) as well as associative and image ornamental designs are inherent to Shevchenko's poetry about Ukraine. Matiyash emphasizes just these very ornamental designs in the best engravings of the cycle. The artist's striving to be harmonious with Kobzar's artwork assisted creation of the best engravings.
