PRAISING THE UNITY OF HAND MOTIONS

In the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, last September was marked with celebrations of the 1100th jubilee of the town of Halych. The presentation of restored and rebuilt monuments of archeology, history and architecture became the key topic of the cultural and artistic program in Halych. Among the jubilee events was an exposition in Ivano-Frankivsk of the All-Ukrainian Fine Arts Exhibition. In addition, a folk art exhibition representing the most important local centres of the Sub-Carpathian region was held. It was significant both in number of participants (125) and exhibited items (299), and it presented almost all types and techniques of folk art that have survived to date. Nothing of the kind had been held in the city for over ten years. The goal of the affiliated centre of the National Union of Folk Art Masters, headed by VasyI Karpaniuk, is to addition to the unification of the region's folk and professional mastersin maintaining folktraditions, assist them in the sales of their works on domestic and international markets. Art critic Victor Melnyk highlights the need to implement a study and research program to discover the still unrealised potential in this field, which is critical for the revival of the role of folk art in the region.
